Surge Brawl Stars Guide — Best Build, Upgrade Mechanic & Tips 2025
Master Surge in Brawl Stars: how his upgrade super works, best gadgets, star powers, modes and counters.
Surge is a Legendary Damage Dealer with a unique mechanic: his Super upgrades him, increasing attack power and range with each activation. A Surge who has charged 3+ supers in one match becomes disproportionately powerful — stopping his super charges is the enemy's main strategic goal.
Surge's Upgrade System
Surge can charge his super up to 4 times per match:
- Level 1 (baseline): Normal attack and range.
- Level 2 (1 super): Attack splits into 2 projectiles on hit.
- Level 3 (2 supers): Attack splits into 4 projectiles; range increased.
- Level 4 (3 supers): Attacks split further; Surge gains a shield on super activation.
The upgrade is permanent within a match — killing Surge resets him to baseline. This creates a critical strategic priority: kill Surge before he reaches Level 3.
Best Modes for Surge
| Mode | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Gem Grab | ✅ Excellent | Upgrades compound over the match; controls mine at Level 3+ |
| Knockout | ✅ Strong | Level 2+ Surge is extremely hard to 1v1 |
| Hot Zone | ✅ Strong | High damage output holds zones as upgrades stack |
| Brawl Ball | ⚠️ Situational | Super doesn't advance the ball; purely combat-focused |
| Showdown | ✅ Good | Upgrade advantage compounds against other players |
| Heist | ❌ Weak | Needs sustained fights to upgrade; heist is too fast |
Best Build
Gadget: Power Surge — Surge instantly charges his super. Use it the moment your first super is ready to immediately trigger the Level 2 upgrade without waiting to deal damage.
Star Power: To The Max — when Surge reaches max level (4), his attacks bounce to nearby enemies for bonus damage. At max level, Surge can clear entire clusters of enemies with a single attack chain.
Super Charge Strategy
Surge charges his Super by landing attacks. The fastest charge path:
- Use your gadget (Power Surge) to get the first super immediately.
- Land attacks on any target to charge the second super.
- At Level 3, your attacks do enough damage that the fourth super charges naturally.
In Gem Grab: target the gem carrier first for maximum disruption + upgrade charge from combat.
Counters
Hard counters: Brawlers that can one-shot Surge before he upgrades (Shelly at point-blank), or fast-closing assassins who kill him at Level 1 before his advantage kicks in.
What Surge beats: Any brawler at Level 3+; particularly effective against medium-HP brawlers whose health does not scale with the power of Level 3+ attacks.
