Spike is a Legendary Damage Dealer who throws cactus grenades that split into 6 spiky projectiles on impact. He is one of the most deceptively complex brawlers: low HP, moderate range, but his Super — a spiky slowing zone — is among the most powerful area-denial tools in the game.

Spike's Unique Mechanic

His main attack grenade deals moderate damage on direct hit, then splinters into a spread of spikes. Enemies hit by multiple spikes take stacked damage — up to 3 spikes can hit a single target. This means up-close opponents take dramatically more damage than distant ones.

The optimal range for Spike is 3–5 tiles: close enough for multi-spike hits, far enough that enemies can't easily reach him.

Best Modes for Spike

ModeVerdictWhy
Gem Grab✅ ExcellentSuper zones the mine; controls gem fights entirely
Hot Zone✅ ExcellentSpike zone on the capture point wins the game
Knockout✅ StrongHigh damage output eliminates low-HP targets
Bounty✅ GoodConsistent damage from safe angles
Brawl Ball⚠️ SituationalSuper blocks goal lanes
Heist❌ WeakToo fragile to push the safe

Best Build

Gadget: Popping Pincushion — Spike launches spikes in all directions instantly. Use it when surrounded or to punish a tank closing distance.

Star Power: Fertilize — Spike heals when standing in his own super zone. Combined with the slowing effect, Fertilize lets Spike safely hold a zone while healing faster than enemies can damage him.

Zone Control with Spike's Super

Spike's Super plants a zone of thorns that slows and damages any enemy inside it. The zone lasts 7 seconds. Strategic placement:

  • Gem mine (Gem Grab): Place on the mine to deny gem collection. Enemies must take damage and slow to approach.
  • Choke points: Any narrow corridor with a Spike zone becomes a kill corridor.
  • Objective zones (Hot Zone): A Spike super on the capture point wins ticks for free.

The cardinal sin: placing the Super too far from the enemy. It needs to catch someone to be worth the charge.

Counters

Hard counters:

  • Leon — invisible approach bypasses zone awareness; Leon closes before you react.
  • Crow — long-range, mobile, poisons Spike and retreats. Spike can't chase.
  • Edgar — if Edgar closes with his super, Spike dies before he can fire the second shot.

What Spike beats:

  • Tanks with no mobility (Bull, El Primo without gadget) — super kites them perfectly.
  • Gem carriers — catching a gem carrier in your super is a free kill + dropped gems.
  • Cluster of enemies — multi-spike hits on grouped opponents are devastating.

Map Tips

Spike needs walls and bushes to hide during grenade reload. Without cover he's exposed. Best maps: Hard Rock Mine, Gem Fort, Sneaky Fields.

Avoid open Bounty maps with extremely long lanes — his range is mid, so he'll be outranged by Piper or Brock in flat corridors.
