Mortis is one of the most mechanically demanding brawlers in Brawl Stars, and one of the most rewarding to master. He is a Mythic Assassin who moves entirely through his dashing main attack — he has no conventional auto-aim fire button. Every attack is a committed directional dash.

What Makes Mortis Different

Most brawlers stand still and fire. Mortis is always moving. His attack dashes him forward 4 tiles while dealing damage to any enemy in his path. This creates two realities:

  1. He cannot kite — unlike ranged brawlers who retreat while shooting, Mortis must close distance to deal damage.
  2. His mobility is his defense — a well-timed dash sidesteps projectiles entirely.

Best Modes for Mortis

ModeVerdictWhy
Gem Grab✅ ExcellentSteals gems from carriers, escapes with dashes
Brawl Ball✅ ExcellentDash-carries the ball, bypasses defenders
Knockout✅ GoodHigh burst if you can isolate targets
Heist⚠️ SituationalStruggles against defensive buildings
Bounty❌ WeakLow HP makes him a star gift on open maps
Showdown⚠️ SituationalStrong with power cubes, fragile without

Best Build

Gadget: Combo Spinner — lets Mortis spin with his shovel, dealing burst damage at close range when surrounded. Use it the moment 2+ enemies are within 1 tile.

Star Power: Creepy Harvest — heals Mortis on each elimination. This is why Mortis is viable: if he can get the first kill, the heal snowballs into multi-kills. Swift Vengeance (attack speed boost after super) is viable in Gem Grab for escape plays.

Counters

Hard counters:

  • Shelly — her super slow stops your dashes; her spread hits across your movement arc.
  • Frank — one super stun and Mortis is dead before he can dash out.
  • Bea — charged shot one-shots at low HP; never dash into a charged Bea.

What Mortis destroys:

  • Poco, Byron, Squeak — Support brawlers with no escape. Dash in, burst them down.
  • Barley, Dynamike — Throwers panic-toss but can't hit a dashing Mortis.
  • Sandy — inside his sandstorm you're invisible too; rush him down.

Advanced Techniques

Dash-cancel: Start a dash toward a wall and immediately dash the opposite direction. Done right, you bait a defender into playing toward one side then escape the other — essential for gem carrying.

2-tap combo: Against squishy targets (Nani, Piper, Belle), two consecutive dashes deal enough damage to eliminate them before they can react. Time the second dash as you reach their hitbox.

Super stacking: Mortis charges his Comet Super by damaging enemies. Deal damage with dashes consistently — even chip hits count. A charged super mid-fight heals your team and enables a kill on a retreating enemy.

Trophy Pushing with Mortis

Mortis is unforgiving below Power 9. At Power 11 with Creepy Harvest, each kill heals ~800 HP — enough to chain fights. His win condition is always isolation: 1v1 a support brawler, heal from the kill, then target another.

Never fight a tank head-on. Never engage when your super is empty unless your target has under 50% HP.
